Chinese New Year

2018 is the year of the dog. The global celebratons are an explosion of light and sound involving bell ringing, lighting firecrackers and also watching traditional lion dances. Chinese families gather together for a reunion dinner on New Years Eve and clean their houses to sweep away bad fortune on New Years Day.

Traditonally children would be given red envelopes stuffed with lucky money and positve wishes on New Years Day.

We visited Bruce Castle to show them how Chinese New Year is being celebrated.

They watched carnival videos and carnival dance shows. They were mesmerised by the colours and the tradition.

We set up some activites for them to do such as colouring in Chinese fans and colouring in their own costumes. At the end of their activites they made their own colourful costumes out of different colour materials.

Our children very much enjoyed their trip to Bruce Castle and we are looking forward to our next trip.
